Orlistat Review

What is Orlistat?

Orlistat is prescription only drug based ingredient which is commonly found in Xenical and the slightly weaker and over-the-counter diet pill – Alli.

Both Xenical and Alli are known as “fat binders” -  due to the drug’s unique ability in preventing around 28% of dietary fat from being absorbed by the body.

Can Orlistat actually help you lose weight?

While Orlistat can help lower daily fat intake, it has no effect on stored fat in the body. This means that if you are already overweight, Orlistat will only help you control you calorie intake and may do little to promote actual weight loss.

However, Clinical trials have suggested that Orlistat can give positive results when taken in conjunction with a low calorie diet.

Orlistat Side Effects?

Orlistat has raised some controversy over recent years, due to an alarming number of patient complaints.

Xenical (which contains Orlistat) is currently under investigation by the FDA after it was found the drug may have been responsible for a total of 24 deaths since 2001.

Side effects include relatively mild reactions such as diarrhea and upset stomach, to rather more disturbing complications such as heart attacks, strokes, lung clots and organ failure.

Orlistat alternatives?

While fat binders containing Orlistat can offer some positive results, the chance of potential side effects far outweigh any real benefits.

Since 2001, there are have been a number of fat binders released which work as well as, if not better than Orlistat which do not feature drug based ingredients.

Proactol is one of the better ones out there, and has recently been awarded as The Telegraph’s best fat binder.

Proactol claims to offer all of the benefits of Orlistat, without any of the negative side effects, thanks to its 100% natural composition.

Containing only prickly pear extract, Proactol breaks down into natural fibres which “bind” to fat molecules making them too large to be used by the body. The additional benefit is the fibre also works to gently suppress appetite meaning you are less likely to snack between meals.

Proactol is currently only available to buy online, although plans to introduce the product to Boots and a number of key pharmacies are in place.

Although fairly expensive for a natural product, the lack of any potential side effects makes Proactol an interesting alternative to drug based fat binders.

Proactol is clinically proven, 100% safe, and available with a 6 month guarantee if you are not satisfied with the results.
